INPI receives request for the recognition of Designation of Origin for specialty coffees from Paraná.
In Mandaguari (PR), coffee is not just a beverage; it is part of the history and culture that that have stood the test of time. Recently, the region’s Producer’s Association took a significant step forward by filing a request with the National Institute of Industrial Property (INPI) for recognition of the Designation of Origin (DO) for the Paraná coffee “Café de Mandaguari.”
Paraná, which is one of the largest producers of specialty coffees in Brazil, had its first Geographical Indication (as Indication of origin) granted in 2012, and can now receive the state’s first DO for specialty coffees.
In addition to the region’s notoriety and prestige, the DO requires a description of the qualities and characteristics of the product that stand out exclusively due to the geographical environment, including natural and human factors.
This is a significant step towards making our coffee truly unique on the global stage, and we at GPT are looking forward for this achievement, which not only values our producers, the region, and its traditions but also strengthens Brazil’s image as a country that preserves the authenticity of its products and respects intellectual property.
