INPI grants first GI for coffee in 2023
The good and traditional coffee has a history in Brazilian lands. Besides being the largest producer of beans, the country, which is also the second-largest consumer of the beverage in the world, has just received the recognition of Geographical Indication (GI) in the Indication of Provenance (IP) category for the coffees from the State of Minas Gerais.
The official publication by BPTO (Brazilian Patent and Trademark Office), carried out yesterday, July 25th, specifies that the IP – requested by the Associação dos Cafeicultores do Sudoeste de Minas – was granted to 21 municipalities in Minas Gerais and highlights not only the production volume but also the quality of the coffees, acknowledging the special grains from the region.
