Brazil Takes Action Against Counterfeiting: INPI Launches New Anti-Counterfeiting Tool
Recently, the Brazilian Patent and Trademark Office (INPI) introduced a new anti-counterfeiting tool aimed at enhancing the country’s fight against the growing issue of counterfeiting. This innovative platform allows authorities with police and inspection powers to quickly access contact information for representatives of infringed trademarks’ owners.
The directory centralizes information on more than 35,000 registered trademarks and their owners and representatives, making identifying and combat counterfeit products easier. Authorities can contact legal representatives immediately when they come across counterfeit goods.
The tool’s launch marks a significant step forward in protecting both local and international brands operating within Brazil. By streamlining communication between authorities and businesses, the platform aims to facilitate faster and more effective enforcement of intellectual property rights, ensuring better outcomes in the fight against counterfeit goods.
From the perspective of our Partner and Trademark specialist, Isadora Lima, counterfeiting in Brazil has long been a challenging issue, but tools like these represent a promising shift. By enabling a more transparent and connected process between seizure operations and trademark owners, the new tool has the potential to significantly improve enforcement efforts. Trademark owners, along with their legal representatives, will be able to work more effectively with authorities, helping to secure faster responses and protect their intellectual property more efficiently.
Furthermore, this direct communication between enforcement bodies and law firms strengthens the legal frameworks that protect trademarks in Brazil. It’s a positive development for both national and international companies aiming to safeguard their brand identities in one of the world’s largest markets.
