BPTO presents its 2026 plan and announces advances in trademarks and industrial designs
On January 29, the Brazilian Patent and Trademark Office (BPTO) held its first meeting under the Permanent Dialogue with Stakeholders initiative. During the meeting, the BPTO’s Trademarks Directorate presented its priorities for 2026.
Alexandre Lopes Lourenço, the current Director of Trademarks, Industrial Designs and Geographical Indications, outlined the main topics of the 2026–2027 regulatory agenda. The document sets out the matters to be discussed with society in order to establish new regulations, as well as to review recent changes that did not achieve the expected results.
One of the most relevant points of the discussion was the BPTO’s combined efforts to reduce the examination time for trademark applications. Currently, a trademark application may take almost three years to be examined, a timeframe that is incompatible with market realities and users’ expectations. Among the measures announced are the integration of 30 new examiners into the workforce and the imminent adoption of artificial intelligence tools to support the examination process.
Our associate Pedro Vilhena expressed confidence in the BPTO’s plan: “After a year marked by many changes, some of them abrupt, the BPTO seems to be returning to a path of constant dialogue and demonstrating a willingness to improve examination timelines. This is excellent news!”
