Software is within the concept of intellectual work, subject to copyright protection. The protection granted by the Brazilian legislation to software has an international scope and the “Software Law” incorporates the understanding that computer programs should be protected in the same way as literary works; however, their registrations are made at the INPI and not the National Library.
The copyright on software guarantees the holder protection of the property rights related to the economic exploitation of the work. These rights make the reproduction, editing, distribution and use of the software by third parties prohibited without the express permission of the owner.
